Plot summary[ edit ] The novel is written largely from the point of view of the narrator, a young, aspiring writer and playwright in London. The Indians are not metaphysicians enough to have discovered this idea, this logos, this intermediate power between Edition: For creation out of nothing was impossible, and matter was unmanageable.

Inspiration[ edit ] The Moon and Sixpence is not, of course, a life of Paul Gauguin in the form of fiction. After helping Strickland recover from a life-threatening illness, Stroeve is repaid by having his wife, Blanche, abandon him for Strickland.

We learn that Strickland had settled for a short while in the French port of Marseilles before traveling to Tahiti, where he lived for a few years before dying of leprosy.

Tiara had arranged a match between Strickland and her young, infatuated cousin Ata Elena Verdugo. The break is succeeded by privation and industry, by long periods of work and outbursts of savage sexual conquest; and the artist at length dies, blind and leprous, in Tahiti.

He lives a destitute but defiantly content life there as a painter, lodging in run-down hotels and falling prey to both illness and hunger. The mechanician of the universe had a complete idea of the universe before he made it, and this idea, this logos, was almighty, or at least powerful enough to produce the world; but it must be made of matter, which was eternal.

The Moon and Sixpence Summary

The idea remained in his mind for ten years, until a visit to Tahiti inwhere Maugham was able to meet people who had known Gauguin, inspired him to start writing. They would grow old insensibly; they would see their son and daughter come to years of reason, marry in due course — the one a peretty girl, future mother of healthy children; the other a handsome, manly fellow, obviously a soldier; and at last, prosperous in their dignified retirement, beloved by their descendants, after a happy, not unuseful life, in the fullness of their age they would sink into the grave.

Strickland later discards the wife; all he really sought from Blanche was a model to paint, not serious companionship, and it is hinted in the novel's dialogue that he indicated this to her and she took the risk anyway. He was indifferent to money. I heard much about him.
